Geographic Location:

Gilmer County is located in the Northwest Georgia Mountains and encompasses 439 square miles. It is bordered by Fannin, Gordon, Murray, Dawson, and Pickens Counties.  Gilmer County is 80 miles north of Atlanta and 75 miles southeast of Chattanooga, Tennessee .

Regular commission meeting days are the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month.  Commissioners serve terms of 4 years and are elected at large.  Electorate chosses full-time chairmen ACCG District 1.

Technical College: Appalachian at Jasper (20 miles) with 1,200 students.

2-yr: Truett-McConnell College at Cleveland (63 miles) with 1,338 students; Young Harris College at Young Harris (55 miles) with 660 students.

4-yr: Dalton State College at Dalton (39 miles) with 4,135 students; North Georgia College & State University at Dahlonega (35 miles) with 3,683 students; Reinhardt College at Waleska (34 miles) with 1,078 students.
